My girls are doing so much better than I was at their age, so I guess they’re not doing too badly and I’m not such a slacker mom after all. I was, however, a slacker student and I admit it.
We had a good laugh about my slackness today during dinner. My daughter Jade was debating whether to take another year of AP calculus and was wondering whether she would have to take two separate AP tests for each section… I guess her Calculus class is divided into AB section the first semester and CD section for the second semester… or something like that. I said, “Why are you asking me? I don’t know! You should ask your teacher. I didn’t even take calculus until I was already in college.” To which, she answered, “I was only thinking out loud, mom”. Yeah, well of course she was! I knew she wasn’t expecting a serious answer from me! What was I thinking!
After all, I am the girl who opted to take it easy her senior year in high school by taking the easiest courses possible and get off school at noon by taking only the requisite courses to graduate. I was telling them how one of my slacker course that I took on my final semester of high school was chorus. Yeah, I had my ring of friends rolling on the aisles during graduation when I got up with the rest of the chorus kids during the ceremony to sing a soulful rendition of Abraham, Martin and John, if I do say so myself. I didn’t think it was that funny, but I suppose seeing me, their tone deaf friend up there was just too much of a treat for them. Anyway, what my daughters found even more hilarious was the tale of my chorus final performance.
Little did I know when I signed up for chorus that we’d be required to sing a solo in order to pass the class. This is in addition to the public spectacle of performing during graduation. By the time I found this out, it was too late to withdraw from the class. So, I enlisted my only musical friend who had two years of piano lessons under her belt to practice my solo with me. She’d only mastered two pieces, “You Light Up My Life” and the theme from Ice Castles, “Looking Through the Eyes of Love”. We decided on the later as she could play it better, it was slow enough for me and had no terribly high notes to hit. My girls were not familiar with the song so I told them to look it up on YouTube.
Now, my girls have heard me sing before. Although I didn’t sing this song for them this time, they had the same reaction as my motley group of high school friends. Just imagining their mom singing this song for a high school chorus class, accompanied by her piano playing BFF set them a titter. I and this song even made it to their Gmail chat status! It really wasn’t that funny. I got an A in the class after all! Sheesh! Just because some people have been cast in their school’s production of My Fair Lady, you’d think they were the only one to have hit the limelight!

Hey. Just going through old comments and thought I’d stop by
Oh boy. The piano, guitars (electric and acoustic), bass, flutes, and especially the strings (I could’ve sworn there were brass towards the climax in another version) are all? beautifully orchestrated to Mellisa’s marvelous voice.
Wow I love this song very touching one and very memorable to me sang by Melissa Manchester. How lovely to hear this song again and again.
I sooo love this song! Thank you so much for posting it!
