Spring has a way of making one turn over a new leaf or at the very least spruce up the old one. This year, with two daughters already out of the coop and down to just one, we’ve decided it’s time to get out of the slump and spruce up the old house a bit.
One way we’re accomplishing that is to drastically de-clutter. It’s amazing how much you can accumulate over the years! I looked at some of the things that I pulled out of dark corners and wonder, “Why are we hanging on to this?” So I have resolved to throw out anything that is no longer working or useful, and even things that are still in working order if we haven’t had use for them in the last year or two, they are going out.
With de-cluttering and re-organizing, comes the need for storage space. That’s the hubby’s job (one of many) is to build shelves and drawers for the things that we are keeping. He had to find sturdy and secure storage solutions then had to build them.
Since we live in a small old house, pre-built cabinets often end up fitting awkwardly and ending up not being very useful. Luckily, my husband can make just about anything when he has time. This year, he’s making time. Which makes me one happy wife!
First on his list to do, make a home for for my books that have slowly taken over every nook and cranny in the house, including our bed’s headboard which drives him crazy. He’s afraid they’ll fall on his head one of these days… actually, one of those days already happened. I forgot. Ergo, the bookcase made it to the top of his to-do list.
This past weekend, he finally finished building and painting my bookcase, and when I came home on Friday, a pristine but sturdy shelf for my books was waiting for me. I couldn’t wait to get started filling it with books! I spent the whole weekend sorting and dusting books and finding their rightful place on the shelf. I was in heaven! (Even though I forced myself to part with quite a number of books destined for the library or relief store)
So, thank you, husband who builds me bookcases instead of bringing me flowers. I hated to leave the house this morning because I just wanted to look at this beauty all day long!
