diveI have a dream that is yet unfulfilled, and that is to travel. I love to travel and envy those that do. I am still skeptical when road warriors say that what they do is not as glamorous as it’s cracked up to be. I want to be in their shoes. I want to whine, “I’m so sick and tired of travelling!”. If only…

Nowadays, I travel on the internet. I read anything related to people experiencing different cultures, visiting foreign countries, eating exotic cuisines. My virtual travels turn first class when I find exceptionally creative writers who are able to put their adventures on paper and make you feel as if you’re sitting right next to them.

That is why I’m writing about this guy, I don’t really know him. I came across his quest through an online magazine. He is on a quest to become American Airlines’ Ultimate Road Warrior. It’s another one of those airline constests. Nothing really significant. But, I’m a busy body so I clicked on the link to see what’s the deal, and found Mr. Kiphart’s entry to the contest.

It is his essay that answers the question:

Okay, besides home, for you, there’s no place like __________. Tell us about it and why it’s special or important to you.

His answer is: In the Middle of Nowhere, otherwise known as Way out in Left Field.

It is one of those essays that made me wish I had the creativity and experience to have written. There are so many little gems in there that I want to reprint the whole thing here. But I printed it out instead so I can read and re-read it at leisure. I urge you to read it and maybe afterwards you can put in a vote for Mr. Kiphart. Like I said, I don’t know him, but I read the other contestants’ essays and I think his is the winner, hands down. I leave you with taste of what he wrote:

The middle of nowhere is a place that you still can’t get to in a day, even with planes, trains, automobiles, and the team bus. It’s the place that always puts a grin on your face. It’s the place that teaches you that crossing the goal line first is not as important as the course you took to get there.
