Missing: the Girl Who Mutilated this Book

When I was in college and had a choice between used and new books, I almost always bought new unless the used book was pristine and unmarked. Before that, I didn’t have a choice. I just had to live through the scribbles and highlights of the previous textbook user. If their name was written on the bookplate, and I knew them, their reputation was taken down a notch in my mind. But after high school, I had a choice and I chose unblemished books.

I admit, I don’t like reading ‘dirty’ books. I like to keep mine as clean as possible. Because of that, I keep meticulous notes in a separate notebook. I am not obsessive about keeping a book clean, mind you. I’ve had lapses when I didn’t have anything else to write on and I just had to make a note on the margin or highlight a passage. The reason I didn’t like books that have been highlighted or marked up when I was in school was not due to any OCD tendencies either, I just didn’t want any spoilers. I want to see a passage and say to myself, ‘Wow! that’s highlight worthy!’ When something triggers a question or thought, I want to be the one to jot it down on my notebook or on the margin. I don’t want other people’s mark ups to influence how I understand or absorb or react to any book.

But I found, in the process of reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, that maybe there’s another way of looking at mark ups.

Happy Birthday for the 19th time and Counting

Do you remember what you were doing two decades ago? Well, almost two decades. I do! I remember exactly what I was doing 19 years ago.

19 years ago, I was huge as a house! No, really! I was so big, I could hardly move. 11 months after my first baby, I was delivering my second. Yeah, crazy, right?

baby #2

It was a crazy time, it was exhausting, but it was also the most rewarding and joyous times. Ah, I miss having babies.

Now, she is a young lady and still screaming for attention even when she’s not trying. 🙂 That’s just the kind of young woman she is. She’ll make your head turn even if you don’t mean to. And don’t let her flash a smile at you, you’ll be sunk for sure. And if you ever get a chance to talk to her, you might as well have heard the sirens sing. You won’t be going anywhere else.

Everyday since she was born, she’s made us proud. Even then, as a new born she garnered attention as people came to gaze at the biggest baby at the nursery that day. lol! I supposed we should have realized that omen was just a taste of what was to come. She commands just by BEING. 🙂

To my baby girl, HAPPY 19TH BIRTHDAY!

That I love you, is a given. That you are my daughter, is a blessing that I am thankful for everyday.

LaPiS #7 – Birthday

The theme for this week’s Lasang Pinoy Sunday is Birthday! The event hostess, Ces, says she chose this theme this week because it’s her birthday week, so let me start off by greeting her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

It’s my birthday week too as it is for another fellow Leo and blogger friend, so all over the world, this week is an auspicious week. This is a lucky year for my birthday too as in the Chinese culture, the number 8 is very lucky and that is one reason why the Olympic games will be starting on 08-08-08. So I’m crossing my fingers that good things will happen this year although, as luck would have it, my girls will not be with me this year for the first time.

Birthdays for me has always been a celebration that requires kids. I love celebrating birthdays with children because of the wonder and innocence that remains in them. It’s contagious and I love being in the same air as that wonder. The photo, was taken on my birthday last year when we were in Los Angeles, surrounded by my daughters, my nieces, sisters, cousins, parents, grandma and more of my large and extended family. The cake was from one our favorite bakery in Chinatown, Phoenix. It’s the famous sponge cake filled with strawberries and cream and frosted with whipped cream. This year, it will just me and my husband celebrating, but I’m sure good food will be involved and definitely the Olympics opening ceremonies is in line instead of a movie.

Since I didn’t have a good birthday themed food photo, I decided to post this entry here instead.

Happy Belated Birthday, Ange!

So we are bad Aunties and cousins “Bad, bad, bad, forgetting to send that baby’s card!” (we’re hitting ourselves ala Doby in Harry Potter :)) Ange turned one last week, on Thanksgiving, and we forgot to send her card. I found it in my purse this mornings 🙁 sowwy….
